Reminder from Dr. Tai: |
|
Nationwide hepatitis B virus vaccination program has been launched since July 1984.
However, hepatitis B virus vaccine and hepatitis B immune globulin cannot totally
prevent mother-to-infant transmission of hepatitis B virus. 2.46% of offspring of
hepatitis B virus surface antigen positive mothers are still got infection and they
are at risk of chronic infection or chronic carrier. Therefore, hepatitis B virus
surface antigen and antibody should be tested in those born to a hepatitis B virus
carrier mother at one year of age. By doing so, we can confirm whether those
children are infected by mother-to-infant transmission or fully protected by
antibody.
