First carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis (or basal joint arthritis) of thumb is a
common issue of hand. It is the most common degenerative joint disease around hand
and wrist. It usually affects middle-age lady with thumb weakness and pain around
base of thumb when grip, grasp or pinch an object. When the inflammation flared up,
the basal joint of thumb may become swollen and painful. In advanced stage of basal
joint degeneration, deformity of thumb may be presented with progressed functional
deficit and cosmetic issue. For early-stage disease, conservative treatments
including medication, bracing and physical therapy may offer some help. However, for
patient with refractory symptoms or advanced osteoarthritis, surgical treatment
should be considered. Either arthroscopic partial trapeziectomy or open total
trapeziectomy with or without joint suspension surgery may relief pain and improve
hand function. When such kind of thumb symptoms occurred, early doctor visiting was
suggested for early-stage treatment before further joint destruction.
